OUR STORY

We are a non-profit organisation based in rural Tamil Nadu, India that works towards improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We use a combination of education, life skills training, and agriculture to help people who are faced with exclusion, neglect, and many other disadvantages that limit their effective participation in mainstream society.

OUR HISTORY

Karthik doing a Ted talkSristi Foundation was founded in 2013 by Mr. Karthikeyan Ganesan, a psychologist who spent 15+ years working with children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In Karthik’s teenage years, he volunteered at an orphanage in Pondicherry, where he lived for 12 years. It became his life’s purpose. He lived alongside incredible children who enriched his life, witnessing disabled and non-disabled children living harmoniously together. However, while the non-disabled children attended school, graduated, secured jobs, and started their lives, the children with disabilities mostly stayed home, receiving food and shelter but engaging in no meaningful activities. This observation led Karthik to study psychology, eventually becoming the director of the same orphanage. Despite his efforts to provide care and support, he found that little change was possible. This was not only the reality at that orphanage but a widespread issue across India, where most children and youth with intellectual disabilities ended up in institutional care.

Karthik began to imagine what it would be like to be confined to one’s home, receiving food and shelter but doing nothing—day after day, forever. The frustration that would build from such a life was exactly what he saw happening to his disabled friends. This realization compelled him to leave the orphanage in search of a solution.

These experiences eventually led him to establish Sristi Village. You can read more about the organisation and our approach below. You can also watch a documentary on Sristi Village here.
